Together with Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the DHZB Foundation governs the German Heart Center of Charité (Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité, DHZC), which ranks among the 10 leading hospitals for cardiology and cardiac surgery globally. With more than 90.000 inpatient and outpatient interventions per annum, DHZC is one of the largest heart centers in Europe boasting a high level of subspecialization across all congenital and acquired cardiovascular diseases.
The foundation assumes its governance role alongside Charité through shared rights and responsibilities in the DHZC Supervisory Board. The foundation provides funding to support strategic initiatives and the long-term development of the hospital. In addition, the foundation supports the strategic development of DHZC through its educational center and scientific funding.
Excellent training and continuous education of healthcare professionals is critical to high quality of care. Therefore, the DHZB Foundation has established DHZB Akademie, an inter-professional educational center for healthcare professionals with a particular focus on cardiovascular medicine and nursing.
The academy has a dual mission. First, it closely collaborates with DHZC to attract and develop healthcare professionals to foster its high quality of care. Second, the academy provides a platform to share the expertise of DHZC experts beyond Berlin and Germany, to contribute to the international knowledge exchange in the field of cardiovascular medicine.
More than 1.000 healthcare professionals participate in trainings and courses at DHZB Akademie every year. Our academy runs a simulation center for cardiac interventions and a skill lab for intensive care and nursing – providing an excellent environment for inter-professional team-based trainings.
Berlin is an international center for science in cardiovascular medicine. With a large number of research groups focusing on cardiovascular disease, a multitude of interdisciplinary research institutes and its extensive clinical infrastructure, Berlin hosts a striving community of researchers in the field. Approximately 500 annual peer-reviewed publications of our heart center exemplify the dynamic scientific environment in the German capital.
DHZB Foundation aims at fostering and expanding Berlin’s role and impact in cardiovascular science globally. The foundation currently invests more than € 1 million per annum in domains covering cardiac surgery, anaesthesiology, paediatric cardiology, cardiac imaging, artificial intelligence and digital medicine, among others. The foundation puts particular emphasis on bringing innovation into the clinic by supporting spin-offs and start-ups with promising product developments.
